Renovation of an old house in Asturias with aged oak parquet flooring
In the heart of the Asturian landscape, where stone and vegetation have coexisted for centuries, this old abandoned house has been brought back to life. The intervention has been comprehensive but respectful: preserving the original exterior aesthetics was an essential condition. The stone façade, the volumes and the rural essence remain intact, adapting to the natural environment as they always have.
The challenge lay in the interior. How to update a traditional home without losing its identity? How to introduce a contemporary language without breaking the architectural coherence? The answer lies in the choice of honest and timeless materials. And, especially, in the flooring provided by Moskito parquet. The flooring chosen for this project was Época 6, an aged oak parquet finished with natural oil, which acts as a common thread between tradition and modernity.

An abandoned house that recovers its essence
Traditional stone houses in Asturias have an unmistakable character. Their thick walls, irregular textures and natural thermal properties are part of their architectural personality. In this renovation, the priority was to preserve that identity.
The façade has been kept virtually intact. The original stone has been cleaned and consolidated, respecting its texture and colouring. The entrances, woodwork and exterior details follow the original construction logic, maintaining consistency with the rural landscape.
From the outside, the house retains its historic appearance. Nothing anticipates the interior transformation.

Contemporary interior without losing its original character
Upon entering, the space transforms. The layout has been adapted to suit modern living: more open spaces, greater natural light and visual integration between rooms. The exposed stone walls remain the focal point, but now coexist with clean lines, minimalist furniture and contemporary elements such as the suspended fireplace. This contrast does not seek to create a break, but rather a balance. The key to the project was to prevent the interior from feeling overly modern or artificial in contrast to the rustic character of the building. This is where the flooring plays a fundamental role. The floor had to be warm, authentic and striking, but without being heavy. It had to blend in with the stone without competing with it.

Season 6: aged oak parquet flooring with natural oil finish
To achieve this balance, Época 6 was chosen, an aged oak parquet that adds depth, texture and naturalness to the whole.
This model belongs to Moskito’s interior wood collection and is characterised by its craftsmanship on European oak, which highlights its grain, knots and small natural irregularities.
The ageing is not a superficial effect: it is a process that adds character and authenticity, creating a floor with history, even in a newly renovated home. The natural oil finish enhances this feeling. Unlike traditional varnishes, oil does not create a surface film, but penetrates the wood, respecting its texture and feel.

An oak with texture, depth and authenticity
Oak is one of the most highly valued woods in the renovation of old houses due to its strength, stability and timeless aesthetic. In this project, its warm tone balances the mineral coldness of the stone.
The wide boards reinforce the feeling of visual continuity and spaciousness. The marked grain and small micro-cracks characteristic of ageing provide a look that is consistent with the rural character of the house. This is not a perfect, uniform floor, but rather a floor with personality, which accepts the changing natural light throughout the day.
Oak and stone: authenticity and warmth
One of the most interesting aspects of the project is how the wood softens the forcefulness of the stone walls. The stone provides structure, weight and historical memory. The wood introduces warmth, comfort and habitability. The natural oil finish prevents excessive shine, maintaining a matte aesthetic that reinforces the authenticity of the whole. The contrast between the two materials is not aggressive. It is a balanced conversation between two natural elements that share honesty.
Installation and structural integrity
The parquet flooring was glued onto a prepared substrate, ensuring stability and visual continuity between rooms. The decision to avoid changes in materials in the main areas reinforces the unified feel of the space.
In traditional home renovation projects, flooring continuity is essential to avoid unnecessary fragmentation. In this case, the flooring acts as a unifying element.
The transition to the exterior maintains aesthetic consistency, respecting the original architecture without introducing forced contrasts.
Natural wood for renovating historic homes
When renovating an old house, the choice of flooring is crucial. Not all floors work well with this type of architecture.
Aged oak parquet with a natural oil finish is particularly suitable for:
- Renovations of rustic houses
- Renovation of stone houses
- Projects seeking a balance between tradition and contemporary design
- Spaces with large areas of mineral material
It adds warmth without losing authenticity, and improves over time, integrating even more into the architecture. In this project in Asturias, the flooring is not a secondary element. It is the foundation on which the new life of the home is built.
An honest and timeless result
The renovation demonstrates that modernising does not mean erasing history. It means reinterpreting it. The exterior stonework continues to tell its original story. The interior offers contemporary comfort. And the aged oak parquet flooring acts as a bridge between both worlds. The result is a coherent, elegant and natural home. A space where tradition and design coexist without imposing on each other. Because when materials are authentic, balance comes naturally.
